School Days

22 Aug School Days

Greetings Calvary Family and Friends,

Whether you are new to us here at Calvary Presbyterian Church, or are a longtime member, we are blessed to have you join us in worship and service. For many of us whose children are still school-aged, this week included the first day of school, and marked the unofficial end of summer. For those who carry fond memories of the first day of school for themselves or their children, the passage of time can enshrine memories in our hearts, no matter how long ago they occurred. I have vivid memories of the smell of fallen leaves, and the crunch of them underfoot, as I wait for the school bus at the end of my parents’ driveway.

When I observe my children have the same formative experiences, it makes me aware of the bittersweetness of my own memories. However, bittersweetness isn’t always a bad thing. From the author Brené Brown, bittersweetness is the dichotomy of sadness mixed with joy, and can help us appreciate the good things in our lives. The awareness of time passing can highlight the joy in our memories, even if those chapters of our lives have closed.

First Thessalonians 5:16-18 reminds us to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I hope those of you who are experiencing difficulty in life are able to feel God’s presence, and I hope that the bitter parts of life can help you appreciate the sweet parts even more.

Blessings,

Adam Miller
